Jacob is co-owner of Backyard Sports Academy. He is the hitting and catching instructor for BSA and enjoys helping coach the BSA travel baseball teams.
He was born in Merced, California and lived in Turlock, CA for five years before moving to Southern CA. He is one of three boys who all enjoyed playing multiple sports specifically baseball and soccer as well as basketball. Jacob enjoyed a competitive and successful amateur career. He is grateful for the talented players he competed against while growing up which many went on to have successful collegiate and professional careers. In 1991, out of Don Antonio Lugo High School in Chino, CA the Pittsburgh Pirates made Jacob their 14th pick in the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. He passed on college opportunities to play baseball and signed a contract with the Pirates. Jacob played three seasons of professional baseball.
When his playing days were over he wanted to give back to young people. He appreciated the love and support his mother and father gave him while playing and competing in sports; he is grateful to his high school coach, Joe Marcos, for the opportunities he gave him. Coach Marcos is still coaching after thirty years. So, Jacob thought it was appropriate to take advantage of his MLB Scholarship and began attending classes during the winter months off from professional baseball. He attended Fullerton College and then earned his BA from California State University, Stanislaus and a MS in Special Education from National University. He holds a credential in Special Education.
After his playing days were over he began working for Olive Crest Homes & Services for Abused Children. He worked as a child care worker, house manager and then as a human resources representative. Along the way Jacob began coaching baseball at the high school level and eventually worked full-time as a private instructor for RBI Batting Cages in Southern, CA.
He and his wife met their senior year in high school and married in 1996 in Santa Ana, CA. They moved to Turlock in 2000 and now have two boys. His wife Kristen is a Physical Therapist and co-owner of Tower Physical Therapy in Turlock. Prior to partnering with Steve Soderstrom, Jacob taught nine years at the Junior High and High School level.
